S1R Baton II Orange Olight Flashlight Review

It’s always a challenge to find lightweight gear for a bugout bag.  These days, there are many lightweight options for flashlights.  Almost all conventional flashlights use LED bulbs that take less power. They don’t produce as much light as a tactical flashlight.

The S1R Baton II is a tactical flashlight manufactured by Olight.  It weighs in at just 1.8 ounces and is very versatile.  Here are some of its best features:

  • Just 2.48” long. It is perfect for small hands and can be carried just about anywhere.
  • 5 brightness levels that are easy to access.
  • Fast access for moon and ultra-bright modes.
  • Impact Resistant to about 5 feet, and waterproof to about 3 feet (1PX8(M)).
  • Raised grips that make it easier to hold onto.
  • Uses a lanyard or spring clip for carrying.
  • Has a rechargeable battery
  • Battery has a standby life of several months
  • Well built and good quality workmanship.  The power button, seals, and other parts are stable and fit.  The flashlight does not rattle, vibrate, or make odd sounds.  Even after I conducted several tests, the flashlight remained in perfect condition with no sign of damage.

Once the spring clip for carrying is removed, the head and body are very easy to assemble and disassemble.  The threads are well made and easy to manage.

Lighting Specs

As I noted earlier, there are 5 brightness levels to choose from.  You can save battery power and have better lighting when you are familiar with these levels and their characteristics.

  • Moon Level – .5 Lumens.  In the dark, you can see the a dim light about 10 feet away, with optimum around 3 feet or closer. It will not make a beam but can help you locate big objects in the dark.  On this setting, the battery will last for about 8 days.  To access moon level, start with the flashlight powered off. When you turn on the power, hold the button down for about a second.
  • Low Level – 12 Lumens.  This level is about what you would get from a small, keychain-sized flashlight, but with a larger light path.  It will shine about 50 feet in the dark, so you can use it easily for short to mid-range light needs.  The battery will last about 20 hours on this setting.

To access this, and the next two levels, turn the flashlight on.  Then, hold the power switch down until you get the lowest setting.  (Note, the flashlight will cycle through them continuously if you hold the button down. Once you reach the setting you want, simply let go of the button.)

  • Medium Level – 60 lumens.  Shines about 130 feet in the dark.  This level is about what you would get from a mid-sized to lantern style flashlight.  It is a good bit brighter and can be used to locate large and medium-sized objects within the light path.
  • High Level – 600 Lumens, which is somewhere between a 40 and 60-watt incandescent light bulb.  Shines about 328 feet into the dark.   The battery will last about 45 minutes on this setting.  At the high level, this compact flashlight produces more light and shines at a further distance than most conventional flashlights.  You can use this level to see across a yard, light up a room, or read by it from several feet away.  It also still retains some of the tight beam you would expect from a flashlight.
  • Turbo Level – 1000 Lumens or just a tiny bit under a 75 watt light bulb, which runs at around 1100 lumens.  It will shine about 475 feet.  On this setting, it will easily light up a medium to large-sized room.  The battery will last about 37 minutes on this setting.

As with the Moon level, Turbo is not accessed with the main sequence of light levels. Instead, you just double click the power button, much as you would a computer mouse button.

Good Features:

  • To start, this flashlight has a very good range of light settings.  They are comfortable to see by and easy to access.
  • It is very compact and lightweight.  This makes it perfect for keeping in your pocket or packing into a bug out bag.
  • Very easy to grip.  Even though this flashlight is very small, it won’t slip from your hands even if you tend to drop things.
  • The ease of access to Turbo mode makes it useful if you need to disorient an attacker.

Features that Need Work:

  • The pre-installed spring clip makes it hard to screw and unscrew the head from the body. If you have arthritis or other hand issues, the clip makes it harder to deal with the light’s small size.  While you can take the clip off, it may be hard to do depending on your hands.  It would be better if the clip did not come pre-installed.
  • Body heats up very fast.  Some people only register the heat as enough to warm their hands. Others may feel a burning sensation.
  • Magnetic Base is exposed.  If you carry magnets or other objects that produce a magnetic field, this might be a problem. Also, if the flashlight is in the bag with the charger, the charger can attract to the base.  I don’t know as it is safe or not to leave the battery in the flashlight and storing it that way with the charger.
  • The USB connector requires a standard port, which is slowly but surely becoming obsolete. Most laptops today don’t have a port that size. Car cigarette lighter battery chargers, wall chargers, and desktop computers still have them.  Recommend changing this to a micro port or supply an adapter to expand charging options.
  • The instruction sheet comes in many languages. It is a very small sheet with even smaller writing.  People that are farsighted or have other eye problems may find it impossible to read the text without a magnifying glass.  I recommend posting the instructions online so people can download a larger sized copy in their own language.

Product Testing

The Product Testing Results Are As Follows:

Battery Charging

The battery was about half charged right out of the box.  It took about 45 minutes to reach full charge when using a .3 A wall charger.  The time may be different if you plug it into your desktop computer or some other USB charger with a different output speed.

Drop Test

How it was done:  I turned the flashlight on and then dropped it from a second-story window.

What Happened:  The flashlight hit the ground below in a grassy area and then bounced onto the cement.

Results:  There was no damage at all to the flashlight. It remained on and in perfect working order.  The switch also works fine and still works as described in the manual.

Impression: I was pleasantly surprised to see the flashlight appears to have an impact rating that is better than listed in the specs. I don’t recommend making a practice of tossing this light out of high places. It is still good to know it won’t fall apart or be damaged if you happen to drop it from time to time.

Water Test

How it was done:  I turned the flashlight on and dropped it into a 7-gallon bucket of water. The depth was about 1 ½ to 2 feet.  I observed the flashlight for a few minutes to see what would happen.

What Happened: The flashlight hit the bottom of the bucket and did not go out. It remained on and in perfect working order.  When I put my hand in the water, I did not get a feeling of voltage or other problems of that nature.  I was also able to turn the light on, off, and cycle it through its modes with no problems.

Results:  At a shallow depth, the light works underwater.  After removing it from the bucket it still worked fine.  When I opened the flashlight back up, there were no signs of leakage or water vapor.

Impression:  This light will resist shallow water as long as the seal between the body and flashlight head is properly tightened. I don’t recommend dropping it in water when the head is loosened from the body to extend the battery life.

Slippage Test

As I noted earlier, some people might take a look at the small size of this flashlight and think it is hard to hold onto. Here are the results I got when my hands were coated in different materials.

Types of Test Conducted:

  • Dry Hands: My hands were dry, as they would normally be when picking up a flashlight.
  • Hands Wet From Water: I ran my hands underwater and then did not dry them off before picking up the flashlight.
  • Hands Coated in Oil: Coated my hand with standard car oil and then picked up the flashlight.
  • Hands Coated in Mud: Coated my hands with mud and then picked up the flashlight.

What Happened:

  • Dry– Easy to grip when dry.  Once you pick it up, it will stay comfortably in your hand.  Since it has raised surfaces, it won’t slip around in your hand.  After you index the power switch to your thumb, the body of the flashlight will not rotate away.
  • Water– It remains easy to grip and hold in your hand.   When I dropped it into water, it was also very easy to retrieve and didn’t slip out of my hands.
  • Oil–  I found the flashlight does get slippery when I have oil on my hands.  It was also a  little hard to hold and control the power switch.
  • Mud–  I was still able to get a good grip on the flashlight.  It remained solid in my hands. Power switch remained easy to access and use.

Impression: Overall, I was happy with the ease of ability to hold onto and use the flashlight even when my hands were wet or covered in mud.

The flashlight didn’t do quite as well when my hands were covered in oil, but I was still able to hold onto it.   My suggestion to the manufacturer is to create a fireproof covering that will not allow slipping when oil or grease is present.  This could be sold as an accessory or offered as an upgrade.

Conclusion

This is a very small compact flashlight that fits the average person’s hand quite well.  I like the range of light choices and the overall quality of the product.  It is sturdy and meets or exceeds manufacturer specs.

If you have larger hands, the inclusion of a lanyard is very helpful.  You can use that to help keep the flashlight from falling completely from your hands. I also like the spring clip that keeps it in place for pocket carry.  Overall, this is a good quality flashlight.  Even though I haven’t had it for very long, I do feel it is well built and will last for a long time.  As such, it is a good choice for bug out bags, pocket carry, and as a general use flashlight.
